And in despair I bowed my head:
“There is no peace on earth,” I said,
“For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.”

This last weekend I had one friend get engaged and another lose her fiance when he passed away in his sleep. One friend is celebrating a new union and another, I imagine, couldn’t feel more alone. I will not pretend to offer any insight as to why the things in this world happen as they do. I can only offer that in the heights of our joy and in the depths of our despair God is with us yet…

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor does He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.”
