Miscellania
No deep thoughts tonight, just some random musings on recent news storys. . .
Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s all time home run record the other day in baseball and it was somewhat of a bittersweet moment. On the plus side, it is finally over and the baseball world can now focus on baseball after Barry as the steroid era starts to wind down. A-Rod, as I have previously stated, has the best chance of catching and passing Bonds but he does need to stay healthy, as Griffey can attest to. It really is sad that Griffey and Bonds have had such divergent careers. Both will be first ballot hall of famers but how much greater would it have been for Griffey to break the record. We honestly could be rejoicing over the passing of the torch from Aaron to the record breaker. Unfortunately we have to deal with a guy who is possibly one of the most anti-social nut jobs out there. I read an interesting story on ESPN about Barry Zito and how different he is now from when he first came up with the A’s. The reporter was talking about the first time he did a story on Barry and his Zen surfing lifestyle and how now he is tightly wound and carefully controlled by his agents. Sad to see money do that to a guy.
Fake Steve Jobs was outed the other day too as one of the editors at Forbes Magazine. I haven’t been following the FSJ blog for that long but it is kind of sad. Hopefully if they do move it over to the Forbes website they don’t chance the voice of it too much. I don’t think “frigtard” is included in the seven words you can’t say, is it?
I started looking at a new masters program option the other day at the University of Washington Bothell. They have a Masters in Policy Studies program that would let me focus on the area of my choice. I was thinking it would be a fun program to do in conjunction with a focus on technology. It would open some doors both in possibly a government relations role at a company like Microsoft or on the other side as a consultant to a political candidate. I have felt for a long time that most politicians don’t understand technology and how that is creating problems as they pass laws that greatly favor the telcom industry. I started looking at some of the titles people have written their masters theses on though and wow, I don’t know if they could sound more boring. Things like, “Micropolitics and Decision-Making: A Study of One Elementary School.” On the other hand ones like, “The Changing Face of the United States Arms Trade and the Effect on United States Policy Preferences” sound like they could be pretty cool. I was a little worried too when some of their alumni quotes have to do with the value of a class on memo writing, yikes! So I will keep looking and thinking about different possibilities but this is one that would definitely give me some solid job leads after I graduate and still keep the door open for a Ph.D in Political Science or related field. I have to admit is was pretty fun to write my last post though and I do miss writing some of my poly sci stuff sometimes.
Anyway, I think that is pretty much it for now. I’m going to go find some dinner and play a few hours of Civ IV to pass the night away. Chao!
